THE PROGRAM

Experienced instructors, in consultation with heath professionals who have treated combat veterans, designed the program specifically for veterans with combat related stress. The practices taught on the Project Welcome Home Troops courses were selected because they have been used successfully for over 20 years by other service organizations to relieve stress and truama at sites of natural disaster and in war zones. These practices have also been used successfully for stress managment in prisons for both prisoners and corrections officers. Recently, clinical studies of the practices with Vietnam veterans with severe PTSD showed a signficant reduction in symptoms.  (see Harvard Mental Health Letter)

"The biggest health problem facing our society today is stress and the unhealthy ways we handle it.

The breathing techniques are the most effective way to alleviate stress that I've ever found.

They are especially effective for depression, anxiety  and PTSD."

STRESS RELIEF TECHNIQUES
Project Welcome Home Troops uses practices that originate in the time-tested yoga tradition and include techniques in 3 areas:
            -- physical stretching (BODY)
            -- breathing techniques (BREATH)
            -- guided meditation (MIND)
The cornerstone practice used in this program is Sudarshan Kriya Yoga, also known as the Rhythmic Breathing Technique, a unique cyclic breathing practice known to be particularly effective at clearing the deep emotional stress that comes from traumatic experiences. Once learned this technique only needs to be practiced for 10 minutes per day.

Where instructors are available, the program can begin slowly with 1-2 hour sessions offered daily or weekly. In this format participants do not have to commit to attend subsequent sessions. The longer one participates the more the benefits build.

To learn the cornerstone Rhythmic Breathing Technique, (Sudarshan Kriya Yoga), participants must commit to attend a series of classes that build upon one another. Once learned, participants will be self-sufficient in these techniques and can continue the practices on their own. The full set of breathing practices take about 30 minutes to complete on one's own. Stretching and guided meditation practice would add to the time. Some of the practices can also be used as needed, day or night, for a few minutes or longer to reduce sudden anxiety or to help one sleep.

CUSTOMIZED PROGRAMS

Training can be customized to suit most physical disabilities. Those with severe physical disability, including hospitalized patients who may not be able to perform any physical stretching, can still benefit from the breathing and guided meditation practices. A program similiar to the training for veterans is available to family members of veterans.

THE WARRIOR BREATH WORKSHOP

A faster learning program has been designed which includes all of the practices. The workshop is usually taught over 6 consecutive days. Classes last about 3 1/2 hours each and participants must attend all sessions. After a workshop, periodic follow-up group sessions are helpful. These follow-up sessions support the participant's individual practice and provide the extra benefit of an extended guided practice.
